California becomes first state to provide post-release housing for wrongfully-convicted exonerees!

Governor Newsom signed legislation sponsored by Exonerated Nation!

On October 3rd, 2019, International Wrongful Conviction Day, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 701 into law. The legislation is authored by Assembly member Shirley Weber (D-San Diego) and sponsored by Exonerated Nation, a non-profit advocacy organization. The bill makes California the first state in the country to pay for housing of exonerees upon their release from state prison. Effective January 1, 2020, this legislation provides hotel, rent, and/or mortgage payments up to specified monthly limits, which includes 25% above rates adopted by the federal General Services Administration, Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Federal Housing Administration for up to four years after release.

· $5,000 dollars upon release for housing expenses

· Receive direct payment or reimbursement for reasonable housing costs for 4 years

This legislation applies to anyone who was wrongfully convicted, sent to state prison, and eventually exonerated by a court, on or after January 1, 2020 .
