hike for justice exoneree sponsorship

Join the movement! Sponsor an exoneree for our annual hike.

Imagine being locked up for 17 years of your life when you’re innocent… It is estimated that there are up to 10,000  wrongful convictions annually in the U.S.  To date, 3,474 wrongfully convicted individuals have been officially exonerated  and released from prison since 1989 with 290 individuals exonerated in California. It is an unforgivable tragedy that  these innocent individuals have lost years of their lives to a broken system.  Even worse, the vast majority of exonerees never receive compensation for the years lost.  The federal government and many states do not have established  programs to help exonerees secure housing, access health care or mental health services, or obtain employment as they  transition from prison to home, family, community, and life.  You can help us address this human rights issue.

A little about what we do…

Exonerated Nation’s (EN) mission is to heal the debilitating spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical effects of being wrongfully incarcerated through policy change and building a  healing community for exonerees in California and across the nation.

EN is a non-profit organization that has been leading efforts for securing resources for exonerees.  Our advocacy for policy change has impacted recent legislative successes, including the passing of AB 701 making California the first state in the country to pay for housing of exonerees  upon their release from prison and AB 703 which provides free UC, CSU, and community college tuition in California. Our programs and services offer safe spaces and resources for exonerees to promote healing, rebuilding, and self-sufficiency through welcome home care packages upon release, social services navigation, annual healing retreats, convenings for information sharing and peer connection, leadership development opportunities and educational workshops, and wellness resources and activities such as the Annual Hike for Justice.

Your Sponsorship can help an exoneree participate in this year’s Hike for Justice!

On April 27, 2024, We will host our 2nd Annual Hike for Justice at Cataract Falls in Marin County, CA. Exonerees along with their family members and loved ones, and allies will participate in a guided hike promoting mental and physical wellbeing while enjoying some outdoor activity in community.  Participants will receive educational information on the connection between outdoor activity and mental health and include a presentation by the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council about the dangers of tobacco use and the industry’s predatory practices. The primary goal of the hike is to provide health and wellness resources and education to the exoneree community, while also providing an opportunity to bring awareness of wrongful conviction to others.

Outdoor activities, such as our hike, have a profound impact on mental, physical, and cognitive well-being. You can help us make a difference. Your generous sponsorship of $500 supports an exoneree’s participation by helping cover costs associated with travel, accommodations, and meals and provides them with an opportunity to benefit from this health-enhancing experience. We hope to secure funding to sponsor a minimum of 10 exonerees and we believe we will achieve this goal with your support. Please consider partnering with us in this meaningful endeavor.  We are grateful for your consideration and commitment to our cause.

Contributions by check can be made payable to Exonerated Nation Inc. and mailed to P.O. Box 20241, American Canyon, CA 94503. Your donations are tax-deductible.
